Illustrated cover of North Island College strategic plan: Build 2026.

BUILD 2026 is NIC’s commitment to ensure students are at the centre of everything we do. It is our promise to support the unique people and communities of Vancouver Island and the Central Coast through individualized learning.

Since launching the BUILD 2026 strategic plan in June 2021, COVID-19 and the rapid expansion of digital learning continue to shift, lifting barriers for some students while raising new obstacles for many others. Economies, communities and students have not been affected equally.

BUILD 2026 is our commitment to keep listening and responding with educational programs, services and delivery methods that meet students and communities where they are now and where they want to be in the future.

NIC’s Board of Governors approved BUILD 2026 NIC’s strategic plan 2021-2026 on Thursday, May 27, 2021 paving the way for us to realize our exciting new vision for the College in the next five years.

The strategic plan builds on the values and core ideas heard in the region in 2019 and 2020, integrates the learnings of the fall 2020 academic plan, Widening Our Doorways & a 10-Point Plan to Reset, Reshape and Renew Learning at NIC, and is informed by ongoing discussions with students, employees, and communities.

The consultation has informed almost every aspect of the plan – including an improved mission statement and a more detailed environment section, revealed on Thursday.

Working together with the Indigenous Education Council and Kelly Shopland, NIC’s Director of Indigenous Education, we are grateful to co-launch BUILD with the first Indigenization Plan in NIC history, on June, 21 National Indigenous Day. The two plans will work in tandem during the next five years as the College works toward lasting and meaningful reconciliation. We will celebrate and promote BUILD 2026 more widely with students and employees in September.

The College now moves to designating responsible leads and teams for each section of the plan and establishing the budgeting and reporting processes to support the plan’s implementation.

The consultation process with the community is ongoing.

"I want to thank the NIC Board of Governors for their input, approval, and support; the College Plan Committee and NIC’s Education Council for their perspectives and feedback; and every student, employee or community member who took the time to meet with me or provide input online," said NIC President Lisa Domae. "You have made my first six weeks incredibly rewarding."

Thank you for participating in the Quick Poll on NIC's Mission Statement. The poll is now closed.

In total, 169 people responded to the poll, with 29% of participants (or 49 people) voting for the original statement "NIC builds healthy and resilient communities, one student at a time." Twelve votes behind, with 22.5% of the votes, was very similar, "Together, NIC builds healthy and resilient communities, one student at a time." Many more people voiced their opinion at College Plan Committee meetings, or voted via email, letting us know what needed to be changed. We appreciate every response.

Our new proposed mission, which will be presented to the Board of Governors on May 27, is posted in this news brief.

The statement now reflects students studying off Island or outside the region, greater collaboration with community partners, and alignment with the soon-to-be-released Indigenization Plan, which shares part of the same name. The word resilient, which has become heavily associated with COVID-19, has been replaced with “thriving.”
